My first memory of anything political in my childhood was the election of JFK. I remember staying up very late watching the results on a very small TV set in my Grandparents kitchen. It was so exciting and a great memory. JFK was what I envisioned a Democrat to be. When he made his inaugural speech he epitomized the beliefs of the Democratic party of that time. The famous "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" was what I believed to be the direction of the Democratic party. I was a child then but held on to those beliefs well into adulthood. I argued with my brother, a staunch Republican in the 80's because I believed the Democrats were the party that best understood what the government was supposed to stand for. I hadn't paid attention to politics at all, didn't know or care about the issues, had little knowledge about the candidates and how the parties had changed. When I started to pay attention I noticed that a great shift had happened. No longer was the Democratic party the party of the people, it had become the party to hold down the people. While I was busy with life and paying no attention to anything having to do with the government, things had radically changed. The conservative beliefs that I believe JFK embodied were now changed to What can the government give to you today? I was suddenly aware that the Government that fought against Socialism, Communism, and corruption in Union organizations had changed.
I don't think President Kennedy would recognize the party now.
I don't recall learning much about the Democratic and Republican parties in High school. I recall the classes about the Civil war. It was the war between the North and South. I don't recall hearing that the Slave owners were Democrats or that the KKK was the enforcement arm of the party. How odd is it that the people who were most affected by the Democrats are such supporters of them. To hear the Democratic leaders mention Jim Crowe, slavery, white supremacy and the republicans in the same breath is astounding. What is hardest is that people buy in to their lies. How they are rewriting history to make themselves sound like the leaders of the North and supporters of Lincoln would be laughable were they not getting away with it in the minds of the Black population north and south.
One of the most interesting movies that show how the Democrats struggled against the segregation issues was a movie about Bobby Kennedy that I watched recently. He hated the idea of the Civil Rights movement. State Representative Elija Cummings commented about this in the movie yet he's a democrat himself. I don't understand his thinking.
When my brother, an avowed Republican debated with me, a hard headed democrat, I finally took the time to listen and understand the difference between the Government hand up and the hand out. When I think about all the programs that the Democrats have put in place to keep the minorities down and in their place where they historically have belonged in the Democratic mind, I could no longer rationally support them.
More recently the Democrats have termed themselves as "Progressive" another word for Socialist. No where in the world has a Socialist government worked. Nicaragua being the best example in recent times. Many countries have tried it and failed. Why the Democrats think they would have a better chance of their perceived Utopia is beyond me. When you read about it, it sounds like the best thing since sliced bread, same goes for the writings of Saul Alinski. Reality however is the proof that it does not and will never work.
When I was growing up I believed in the American Dream. I still believe that in the United States you can become whatever you want, get to whatever level you wish to achieve in your life as long as the government stays the government of the people and for the people. and is not bastardized by the left into a government for the benefit of the government. Barack Obama complained that the constitution limited what he and the government were allowed to do, I feel blessed that our founders put limits on him and all leaders who would have put their ideas of the governmental power ahead of the peoples power. I only hope that the future leaders will believe in the Constitution, support the first amendment and not need safe spaces and cuddles when someone disagrees with their viewpoint, but that's another conversation all together. I'll get to that another time. God Bless your day!
